Character Design
All of my characters start with a personality. I try to imagine what they would be like , what they would wear, how they would act. Imaging myself in each character's shoes helps me make them relatable. I can work in a variety of different styles based on the needs of the project. I always try to capture the element of appeal in my characters. There has to be something that makes them iconic and memorable.
Evan is a young, curious, and adventurous cheetah cub who is interested in science and adventure. I was inspired by the naturally exaggerated shapes of a cheetah's body so I wanted to incorporate these graphic shapes in this anthropomorphic design to capture the animal's distinct essence.
Jan is a character I designed for CSULB AFPA's film Kaiju Delivery Service. She is a millennial receptionist who is so over her job. I was inspired by actress Audrey Plaza with her monotone voice and care-free attitude. Jan sports a messy bun and a professional polo, but casual jeans showing she does the bare minimum at work.
These underseas characters exemplify the protagonist, sidekick, ad antagonist tropes. For the protagonist, I used bright, complementary colors exemplifying his good, fighting spirit. I wanted him to be humanoid to make him more relatable, but I was inspired by the forms and shapes of a sea horse. Despite his appearance his protruding chest shows that he is a proud, dignified warrior. The antagonist is my twist on a large kaiju, based on crustacean creatures. The dark colors, glowing eyes, and sharp triangles in his design are quintessentially evil.
